Introduction
Hey there, welcome to The Lost Coder. My name is Garrett, and I work in tech in Seattle.
Why did I pick the name “The Lost Coder”?
Because I often get lost in scripts or code, or explanations about code. It’s that simple. I am actively learning how to turn that around, and this blog is just a part of that process.
What will this blog cover?
Primarily my development in the Python/dev world in general for personal projects. This is not just to tell other people what I’m working on, but to help commit things to memory by writing. You will most likely see a fair amount of basic stuff (loops, functions, variables, etc), this is all in an attempt to remember what I’ve been forgetting for so long and keep it “under my fingers”. I’ll do my best to tie everything into “real world” examples, something that I believe is lacking in many resources, because I always get frustrated and kind of “shut down” when a tutorial told me how to learn to script or program using examples about a pet store instead of actually managing systems.
I’m not interested in figuring out how many doggies are in the window, I’m interested in running and automating infrastructure and helping developers deploy code properly. But, at the same time, much like becoming a professional jazz musician, you still need to learn your scales and arpeggios, or you’ll never understand chord changes.
Who am I and what am I currently working on?
I am a Systems Engineer in Seattle, currently working with a great tech team to build a new e-commerce platform based primarily on Docker Swarm (mode), Ansible, and Linux with Hyper-V as the base hypervisor. We also have a number of other services already implemented or are in the process of being implemented: Elastic stack for logging, Icinga for state monitoring, IPAM and Datacenter documentation with DigitalOcean’s netbox, the list continues to grow. I’m planning to roll out Prometheus soon for a window into our Docker stacks. I also looked into the TICK stack for this, and it’s not entirely off the table yet.
What are some of my interests outside of “Tech” in general?
Music: Jazz, Old School R&B, Funk.
Gaming: Rocket League.
Sports: College Football.
Science: Astrophysics, Planetary Science, Space in general. I’ll probably tie a few coding projects into this too!
